War rages relentlessly. Explosions ricochet through the air, and fire consumes everything. It’s terror. It’s chaos. It’s pandemonium. It’s destruction. Some pick up their wands; others know it is futile, know that they have no more power to save themselves than the countless victims before them.
It was not always like this. Some have dimmed memories of better times, of an era not so far in the past. There was a time when courageous young witches and wizards stood together against Voldemort, a time when they had the strength to fight. But thatcourage died along with Harry Potter and his followers, twenty-five years ago.
Schools were abolished, and in their place, Voldemort constructed new institutions, where young witches and wizards were indoctrinated. They were taught dark, horrific spells, and then taught to use them against their parents and peers. Voldemort was systematically turning out killing machines in the guise of young children.
Such was the fate of Kartara, a small town just south of Athens, Greece. For the first fifteen years of Voldemort’s dominion, it seemed the town, set in the secluded countryside of Greece, was safe. It was a thriving, close-knit community that hadenjoyed peace for some time now. But in this world, nothing good lasts forever.
There was no explanation the day the Death Eaters swept in and set fire. Jets of green light exploded overhead, and screams were drowned by maniacal laughter. Fire was set into the flesh of children, and their mothers were silenced with just the wave of a wand. Kartara was razed to the ground, but there were those that escaped. Siblings Mikhail and Isabella Akahi fled Greece and made their way across the sea to Egypt. As the only survivors of the Akahi family, the fourteen- and sixteen-year-old were on their own.
It took a year to rebuild the school, and Isabella implemented several security charms to keep it hidden. Nothing was a guarantee, but the school was actually going to open. The Akahi siblings were going to take this stand against the man who haddestroyed their world, and nearly destroyed them.
Mikhail Akahi dubbed the school ‘Chiari’, meaning ‘luminosity’ in Italian. And now, in the summer of 2026, twenty-five years after Voldemort seized power and began to blanket the world in shadows, Chiari is accepting pupils. The possibility of failure is not small, but there is hope.

The Dark Lord was swift to seize power. After the brutal capture, torture, and murder of Potter and all those loyal to him, the balance of power suffered a major shift for the worst. The Ministry, weak and incompetent as it was, was easily toppled, and there was no more government, save the Death Eaters Voldemort used to enforce his law.

And then the mass murder began. At first, it was called genocide as the Muggle corpses began to pile up. But really, no one was safe. An ounce of Muggle blood was a death sentence, as was any compassion for these infidels. And so much as a remark against Voldemort meant torture and murder.
Small villages were raided and large cities were burned. Some managed to lay low, but those that escaped the wrath of Voldemort constantly lived in fear. It was probably only a matter of time before they, too, were discovered, and disaster rained down upon them.

And they survived. Mikhail was strong and clever, and Isabella was practical and intelligent. Together, they forged new lives in Egypt. Mikhail claims that it was fate that brought them to the ruins of an old western-style castle near the coast. Isabella didn’t know what her brother was thinking as he gazed at it, only knew that the wheels were turning.
Ten years after the burning of their home town, Mikhail was making a stand, but a subtle one. Ever the idealist, he wanted to rebuild the castle and make it a school, wanted to educate young wizards and give them the tools to reclaim the world.

And perhaps Chiari is this world’s last hope.
